Welcome Denver Non-Theists!

Hi, I'm Jeanette, founder and organizer of Denver Atheists & Freethinkers. This is a secondary site that very few of our members have joined. It allows our existing members to have their own personal pages, if they choose. To join and be active in our group, you may sign up on our Meetup site. Information about the group is on the home page: http://www.meetup.com/DAFT-Atheists/

Below is more info on our group, and what members should expect if they join on our Meetup site. All references to email, the message board, RSVPs, etc., are about our Meetup site.

We're Denver Atheists & Freethinkers. We were formed to be a Meetup group where people can air even the strongest of atheist and secularist beliefs. But this is also a group for those who consider themselves agnostics, and for those who wish to explore atheism. And some people join because they don't identify with organized religion, so expect to find some diversity in the group. The group is primarily composed of atheists/agnostics, and leans strongly toward rationalism. (Many people are both atheist and agnostic; search the message board if you're confused by that.)

We're primarily a social group and in addition to sitting around talking at small local venues (we usually meet around central/downtown and southeast Denver), we may also have have small BBQs and parties, show videos, go to the movies, visit museums or other educational exhibits or talks, and even occasionally be involved in activism around separation of church and state issues... when we have a core of members who are willing to put in the effort together.

This is kind of a cozy group with a lot of regulars who get to know each other really well. It has kind of a communal feel to it, due to our core of regulars, our choices of venues, and especially because members work together to keep the group going.

Members pay a $1. a year annual membership fee, which goes toward the $144. in annual fees the group organizer (Jeanette) pays to Meetup for use of the Meetup site. Members may pay in person or use the PayPal link on our Meetup site's Home page.

Members also contribute by showing up reliably to events when they RSVP "Yes" (or changing their RSVPs), by participating in events if they can, by engaging in calm and relevant discussions if they use the message board, and by logging in on the site once in a while if they are unable to participate (so that we know there's still some interest).

We make an effort to share information with and from members regarding news of our community, by email and on our message board. And one of the ways some of our awesome members do the same is by contacting the organizers of this group to share info, and by use of the message board.

People who are exploring their own thoughts and beliefs are welcome to join, as long as they're respectful and realize that this is not intended to be a debate club about deities and religion, but more of a refuge. There are members who love to study and discuss religion and engage in philosophical debate, and there are others who just want to get away from their proselytizing families and coworkers, etc. We hope to satisfy a range of interests.

There are a bunch of secular groups in Colorado, some with Meetup sites and some without. Please visit the Colorado Coalition of Reason (COCORE) website for more information about this and other secular groups in Colorado: http://www.cocore.org/
